Small island communities in South Sulawesi rely heavily on seagrass ecosystems for their livelihoods. This study assesses Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) levels and identifies influencing factors across Sabangko, Sagara, and Salemo islands. Results show 43% of respondents have low LEK, while 28% possess high knowledge levels. A nominal logistic regression analysis (Pseudo R² = 0.552) reveals that fishing gear type and income significantly drive LEK variations. Gear used directly within seagrass beds increases interaction, fostering higher LEK through direct observation of species behavior and habitat dynamics. While participants recognize seagrass as vital fishing grounds, significant "blind spots" exist regarding indirect anthropogenic threats like plastic pollution and anchoring. Furthermore, economic pressures often lead to motivated reasoning and cognitive dissonance, causing a disconnect between perceived ecosystem health and the impacts of destructive activities. Despite perceptions of stable or expanding seagrass areas in some locations, widespread declines in fish catches and revenue suggest external pressures such as overfishing. The study concludes that LEK is shaped by the intensity of resource interaction and economic dependence. Strengthening environmental literacy through a holistic seascape approach is essential to bridge cognitive biases and enhance community-led seagrass conservation.
