Purpose: Sustainable development aims to meet present needs while preserving environmental capacity and resources for future generations. However, development activities that neglect environmental aspects continue to cause ecosystem damage, pollution, and environmental degradation. This study analyzes the contribution of environmental ethics to sustainable development and the role of customary institutions in development planning and decision-making. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a literature study of journals, academic articles, and other references on environmental ethics, sustainable development, and indigenous local wisdom. Findings/results: The findings show that environmental ethics provides a crucial moral basis for wise and sustainable natural resource management. Customary institutions also support conservation through local wisdom values passed down across generations, as exemplified by the Kajang Ammatoa community in Bulukumba Regency and Towani Tolotang in Sidenreng Rappang Regency. Practical implications: Integrating environmental ethics and local wisdom into development policies can foster more equitable, participatory, and sustainable development. Originality/value: This study connects environmental ethics and local wisdom with development planning and decision-making, and indicates that the role of customary institutions should be strengthened.
