Abstract

This community service activity aims to optimize the utilization of homestead yards through liquid organic fertilizer and goat manure to strengthen household food security in RT 03, Tanjung Limau Village, Muara Badak District. The activity was carried out through counseling and participatory practice, involving residents in fertilizer production and the cultivation of water spinach, spinach, mustard greens, and celery in polybags using layered planting media made of soil, rice husk, and goat manure. Approximately ten residents actively participated throughout the activity, from counseling to fertilizer production and planting practice. Results show that the yard could be used as a simple vegetable cultivation space, with some plants successfully growing to harvest, while the use of liquid organic fertilizer and goat manure was introduced as an experiential practice in utilizing local materials rather than as an experimentally measured growth outcome. A notable constraint was the suboptimal growth of celery seedlings due to high temperatures and the absence of shade netting, indicating that environmental conditions and supporting facilities remain important factors for successful yard cultivation. Overall, the activity demonstrates that yard optimization has potential as an early step toward strengthening household food security, although it does not yet provide quantitative evidence of improved food security and requires continued maintenance, replanting, and provision of simple supporting facilities to ensure sustainability.
