Abstract

Tanjung Tengah Village has capture fisheries activities that are important to the livelihoods and local economy of coastal communities. This article describes fishing operations, fleet and crew characteristics, catch composition, fuel use, marketing channels, fishing grounds, and constraints based on field interviews and documentation. The findings indicate that fishing operations include large vessels with up to about 20 crew members and small vessels operated by about one to two people. Dogol vessels and netbased fishing gears are commonly used. Recorded catches include shrimp of about 20–30 kg per day, gulama fish of about 10 kg per day, snapper of about 5 kg under certain conditions, squid of about 3–5 kg seasonally, and mackerel depending on catch conditions. Shrimp prices vary by size, ranging from approximately IDR 15,000 to IDR 65,000 per kg. Fuel is obtained locally at about IDR 8,000 per liter, with recorded use of about 20 liters per round trip. Marketing occurs through collectors and, for some fishers, through direct sales. Weather, waves, and vessel or engine conditions are among the reported constraints. These findings suggest opportunities to strengthen production records, market information, collective marketing, catch handling, and fisher economic institutions. The results are descriptive and should not be generalized to all fishers in Tanjung Tengah.
