Abstract

The limited availability of backyard space in Prangat Baru Village is one of the challenges the community faces in meeting household-scale food self-sufficiency needs. This community service program was designed to optimize the use of home gardens through the implementation of a vertical farming system and the use of compost to support the village’s food self-sufficiency. The program was carried out in three main stages: dissemination of basic theory, training in the preparation of vertical farming media and compost, and hands-on farming guidance provided directly to local residents. The results of the activity indicate an increase in the community’s understanding and skills in managing limited land, as evidenced by the construction of two demonstration units of vertical farming installations, and have encouraged active resident participation in providing a sustainable source of food for their families, which has the potential to reduce household expenses.
