Abstract

The Peduli Mangrove program, implemented through Universitas Mulawarman's community service activities in Pilanjau Village, Berau Regency, integrates classroom learning, knowledge assessment, field experience, and audiovisual media as a coastal-context environmental education model. This community-engagement article analyzes the program design, evaluates the available knowledge assessment results, and formulates a sustainability strategy for strengthening students’ environmental literacy. The classroom session was conducted at SDN 001 Pilanjau on July 29 2026, with 80 students in grades IV-VI participating in the pre-test and post-test evaluation. The Nature School component extended learning through direct observation of the mangrove ecosystem in RT 01, while the Sahabat Mangrove video functioned as an educational and digital campaign medium. The activity document reported non-normal data (p<0.001) and a Mann–Whitney test result of p=0.420. The reported analysis therefore did not provide evidence of a statistically significant change in knowledge. Inferential validity is limited because the same students completed both assessments, whereas the reported analysis did not account for paired observations, and individual scores were unavailable for reanalysis. Activity documentation shows student participation in discussions, quizzes, ecosystem observation, and direct interaction with the mangrove environment. Journal literature published during 2022-2025 supports place-based learning, outdoor experience, and multimodal media as strategies for strengthening environmental literacy. Future implementation requires paired analysis, validated instruments, effect-size reporting, assessment of attitudes and behavior, and periodic integration of mangrove themes into school activities.
