Abstract

Pela Village, one of the oldest villages in Kota Bangun District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, has emerged as a new eco-tourism destination offering pristine river and lake ecosystems. However, the environmental sustainability of this area is threatened by climate change, illegal logging, uncontrolled agriculture, and household waste, leading to the degradation of riparian vegetation. To address these issues, a Community Service Program (PKM) titled "Ecological Revitalization Through Reforestation Actions Around the Riverbank and Lake Areas of Pela Village" was conducted. This program aimed to restore riparian ecosystems, enhance community awareness of environmental conservation, and strengthen the village’s ecological resilience against climate change. A participatory approach was employed, involving students, lecturers, village government, youth organizations (Karang Taruna), tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis 3B), and local communities throughout all stages of the activity—from preparation and situational analysis to planting implementation. A total of 3,000 seedlings, including mango, kuini, orange, and renggas trees—species with both ecological and economic value—were strategically planted along riverbanks and lakeshores. The program focused not only on planting but also on educating the community about the benefits of reforestation in preventing erosion, improving water quality, sequestering carbon, and preserving natural habitats. The results showed increased community awareness regarding the importance of protecting riparian zones as part of their livelihood and environmental sustainability. Community enthusiasm was high, with a strong commitment to sustainably maintain the planted trees. On a broader scale, this initiative supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Through a collaborative and participatory approach, the reforestation effort in Pela Village serves as a tangible model of community empowerment in sustainable environmental conservation.
