Abstract

A community assistance program through a Community Service Program (KKN) was carried out in Tepian Buah Village, Segah District, Berau, East Kalimantan. The Tepian Buah village community, especially the youth and students, still needed education regarding increasing awareness for financial literacy from an early age as well as preventing promiscuity from an early age. In an effort to increase children's awareness of the importance of saving and to increase teenagers' understanding of the dangers of promiscuity, an educational activity was held for students in Tepian Buah Village, which was carried out in two locations: SDN 001 Tepian Buah with 50 students as participants, and SMP Negeri 01 Segah with 70 students as the participants. The method used was participatory socialization through presentations, discussions, questions and answers, and the use of educational media in the form of piggy banks, posters, and leaflets. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' understanding, as seen from the difference in pre-test and post-test scores. Among elementary school students, understanding of the concept of saving increased by 54%, while among middle school students, understanding of strategies that smart association as the way to avoid negative influences increased by 52%. Active participation of participants in the discussion also showed that interactive socialization methods are effective in building awareness and positive attitudes. Thus, this activity has important implications for forming a financially intelligent, character-filled younger generation who are able to protect themselves from risky behavior, and can become a model for non-formal, school-based education in rural areas.
