Edukasi Kesehatan Gigi dan Mulut kepada Penyandang Down's Syndrome dan Keluarganya di Samarinda

Down’s Syndrome yang dikenal sebagai trisomi21, merupakan kelainan kromosom yang ditandai dengan peningkatan materi genetik dari kromosom 21. Secara umum penyandang Down’s Syndrome (DS) ditandai dengan gangguan perkembangan kognitif dan mototrik. Selain tanda tersebut, penyandang DS juga sangat rentan terhadap berbagai gangguan kesehatan, termasuk masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Bertolak dari berbagai keterbatasan yang terjadi pada penyandang DS, maka dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini penting untuk dilakukan intervensi untuk mencegah kondisi buruk yang bisa terjadi. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memberikan edukasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut pada penyandang DS dan diharapkan penyandang DS dan keluarganya dapat meningkatkan kesehatan gigi dan mulut mereka. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah pelatihan. Pelatihan dimaksudkan untuk mengembangkan kemampuan dan kesiapan keluarga anak penyandang DS dalam melakukan kebiasaan baik menjaga kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Penerapan kebiasaan baik ini dilakukan dengan mengintervensi penyandang Down’s Syndrome untuk melakukan sikat gigi malam selama 21 hari yang dipantau dan diharapkan akan menjadi kebiasaan oleh penyandang Down’s Syndrome dalam memelihara kesehatan giginya. Secara umum, program edukasi dinilai berhasil karena antusias peserta melakukan pembiasaan kebiasaan baik menyikat gigi selama 21 hari. Dengan kegiatan ini diharapkan apa yang diberikan selama penyuluhan dan pemeriksaan kesehatan gigi dapat tertanam dengan kuat dan menjadi kebiasaan anak down’s syndrome dan keluarganya agar dapat memelihara kesehatan gigi dan mulutnya.
