This study was motivated by the researcher's curiosity about the creation of a single candidate in the 2020 Kutai Kartanegara Regency Head Election (Pilkada). The main focus of this study is to analyze in depth the motives behind the party coalition that was formed to create a single candidate. The objective of this study is to analyze in depth the reasons why political parties formed a coalition to support a single candidate, as well as to examine how political strategies and interests worked behind the process. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, employing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, documents, and literature review. Data analysis utilizes the interactive model by Miles and Huberman. This research applies Michael Laver's (1998) theory of rational choice coalitions to explain the patterns of political party coalitions. The results of this study indicate that the primary motive for the formation of party coalitions is pragmatic interests, such as maintaining power and the influence of incumbent figures on voters, leading to the emergence of a single candidate pair in the 2020 Kutai Kartanegara Regional Election. The electoral strength and power networks that have been established are capable of suppressing the potential emergence of competing candidates. The conclusion of this study is that the dynamics of party coalitions in the 2020 Kutai Kartanegara Regional Election were driven more by rational calculations and power interests than by ideological considerations or policy visions.
