FAKTOR-FAKTOR YANG MELATAR BELAKANGI TERHENTINYA HUBUNGAN TAIWAN DENGAN SAO TOME DAN PRINCIPE

Terhentinya hubungan antara Taiwan dan Sao Tome disebabkan adanya campur tangan Tiongkok yang menggunakan manuver politiknya yaitu Checkbook Diplomacy. Tiongkok sebagai negara hegemon dalam aspek ekonominya mampu mempengaruhi sekutu Taiwan yaitu Sao Tome dengan cara menawarkan bantuan dana yang berskala besar. Atas hal tersebut Sao Tome mengalami perubahan sikap terhadap Taiwan dimana ia melakukan perilaku yang sangat tidak etis dalam hubungan diplomatik yaitu menuntut Taiwan dalam memberikan bantuan dana kepadanya dan jumlah tuntutan tersebut sangat diluar dari kapasitas kemampuan Taiwan. Dengan tidak dipenuhinya tuntutan tersebut membuat Sao Tome mendekati Tiongkok dengan mengakui adanya One China Policy dan hal ini menjadi masalah yang sangat besar bagi Taiwan terhadap sinonimnya sebagai negara yang merdeka. Pada akhirnya Taiwan merespon dengan dilakukannya penarikan personel dan juga menutup kedutaan besar mereka di Sao Tome dan hal ini menandakan secara resminya hubungan kedua negara berakhir
